Home/Core class subjects (sometimes termed Form Class subjects) are subjects that are common at each year level and taught within the form/home class as opposed to electives/options that may be taught to a class made up of students from different form/home classes.
Allocating subjects can be time consuming if done subject by subject, particularly in a large school. To meet this challenge we have developed, in Spider, a quick and efficient method of allocating all home classes by year level using one action. The initial setting up may seem tedious but it only has to be done once with just the occasional tweaking in future years to accommodate curriculum changes the school may decide upon.
Pre-requisites
The way the process works is that it will look at the year level and count how many form classes there are. It will then create the equal number of home class subjects per level eg: if there are five Form classes it will create five English, five Science, five Maths classes and so on. Therefore,
1. Students must be allocated a Form Class
This can be rapidly done using Student Data Changes in the Spider.
Path: Curriculum Overview > Student Data Changes
2. Setting subjects to Home Class
Subjects must be set as 'Home Class'. Path: Curriculum Overview > Subjects
3. Subject Supplement
You will also need to alter/add to the Subject Supplement Path: Curriculum Overview > Subjects
click on the link Subject Supplement for the full document
Allocation of Subjects
As you can see in the image below, this student only has 2 subjects added. These are not home classes and have been added as a single subject. I now want to add all the home class subjects to year 10 students. Path: Curriculum Overview > Student Data Changes
Selection of Students
You will automatically be taken to the next tab 'Students' where you will proceed to select the students you wish to work with. In this case I will be working with all of year 10 so I will tick the box at the top - see image below
Once you are in the Home/Core class section you will see a panel on the left hand side.
The home/form subjects will appear in the center panel
All you need to do now is to allocate the teachers to the various subjects and classes.
Once you have completed assigning your teachers click on 'Process the Current Timeline'
A 'Processed' message will appear next to each line
Your students will now have their core subjects.
